Dear Chicago Bears, Jay Cutler Is Overrated

Jay Cutler has all of the tools to be a great NFL quarterback. He has one of the strongest arms in the league, great size, and excellent form and footwork.

Unfortunately, contrary to most people’s beliefs, these qualities do not make a great quarterback.

Cutler believes he is the best quarterback in the league. Earlier in his career he compared his arm to Broncos great, John Elway. Clearly this has not been the case for Cutler.

This year more than any, Cutler has been making poor reads and has handled himself very poorly. Twice this year Cutler has thrown for four or more interceptions, and has a season total of 18 interceptions—tops in the league.

Although Cutler’s personal numbers are bad, they do not even compare to what he does for his team’s record. Dating back to college and continuing through his first four years as a pro, Cutler has not had a winning record. Ever.

Let me restate this. Jay Cutler has not had a winning record since high school. This is where any personal stats or abilities are thrown out the window. If a quarterback has not had a winning record for eight seasons—and potentially nine—why is he still starting?

Are scouts and coaches really that impressed with his arm strength? Have they not once talked to the guy and realized he has a poor attitude?

Whatever the reasons are, Jay Cutler is on his way to his ninth losing season, and I am sure everyone will be looking to blame someone else for his continuous failures.

Cutler could not win with a big time receiver like Brandon Marshall, and does not look comfortable with a great running back and good tight-end.

Despite the current slide by the Broncos, Kyle Orton has appeared to be just as good of a replacement for Cutler. The Broncos are still in contention for a winning record too. Why could Jay Cutler not succeed with a very similar offense?

The Bears need to decide what Cutler’s fate is going to be this year. They can either part ways with coach Lovie Smith, or they can part ways with franchise killer, Jay Cutler.

More than likely the Bears will fall victim to Cutler’s strong arm and excellent mechanics, and they will fire Lovie Smith. But my plea is this: Do not boost Cutler’s ego any longer. Part ways with him.

He has shown that he cannot win and cannot lead a team.

He is not the franchise quarterback everyone thought.

The Bears need to be the team to step up and show him this. Hell, even the Raiders made the move to sit Mr. Arm Strength, Jamarcus Russel, and look how it turned out for them.

The Bears and NFL need to realize that perfect mechanics and arm strength do not make a great NFL quarterback.

It is time to go back looking for winners and good motivators as great quarterbacks. And sorry Jay, you do not fit either of those qualifications.
