Why TJ Houshmandzadeh Should Be Signed by The Chicago Bears

TJ Houshmandzadeh was recently released by the Seattle Seahawks. A wide receiver from Oregon State, he was drafted in 2001 in the 7th round. He was drafted with the Cincinnati Bengals, along with his college teammate Chad Ochocinco. He was known as the best number two option in the NFL and tied for the league lead in receptions in 2007. He also made the Pro Bowl that year.
He was the prized free agent of 2009, he was signed to a five year, $40M with $15M guaranteed with the Seattle Seahawks. After a disappointing 2009 season, he was cut by new head coach Pete Carroll after the Seahawks decided to go a different direction with wide receivers. He would be a perfect fit in Martz’s pass happy offense. He would line up with Johnny Knox and Devin Hester and Devin Aromashodu.
Houshmandzadeh‘s weakness is that he can’t handle the pressure of being a number one wide receiver. Though he should be number one in Chicago, he still would have the three receivers above as compliments to his play, as a solid pass catcher throughout his career. He would also provide leadership to Bears receivers, which have very limited experience; with Knox and Aromashodu the only “natural” receivers on the team, as Hester and Rashied Davis were both converted defensive backs.
Though much may change at Halas Hall in January, if the Bears would like a guy who is a class act on and off the field, and teach the young wide receivers about life in the NFL and how to succeed in the NFL, the Bears should sign Houshmandzadeh.
