The Bears have filled seven of their eight practice squad spots and all of the players on the practice squad will be familiar to Bears fans. The following is a look at those players who have been added to the practice squad, why they were added, and what their impact may be in the future (with the Bears).
Juaquin Iglesias, WR
Cutting Iglesias was somewhat of a shocking development in the final cuts, because not only had Iglesias looked good this preseason, he was also a pretty high pick in last year’s draft, and many had considered his being cut a waste of a draft pick.
Now that he is back and on the practice squad, the Bears can develop him further, and if there is a need to call him up and put him on the active roster, he should be ready and could have an impact on offense. If anyone at the wide receiver position gets injured, look for Iglesias to get put onto the active roster and contribute.
Greg Matthews, WR
The Bears must have seen something in Matthew that they liked, because they asked him to come back onto the Bear’s practice squad for 2010. The Bears could always use some good wide receivers, and Matthews is someone that, like Iglesias, could have a promising future for the Bears.
Adding him to the practice squad allows them to elevate him if necessary (to the active roster) and gives the Bears another option at wide receiver.
James Marten, OT
Marten was a favorite of the Bears coaching staff during the season and just became a victim of the numbers game at the tackle position. However, he is back, and the Bears will be able to develop him now and hopefully he will get a bigger shot at the active roster next season.
Levi Horn, OT
It’s interesting that the Bears decided to add Horn to the practice squad, but they must have seen something in him that not a lot of other people have seen. Horn will develop over time and could be called upon to come up to the active roster and be a backup at some point this season.
Barry Turner, DE
This one is sort of a head scratcher, since the Bears didn’t allow Turner to get much work during training camp and the preseason (games). Once again, this must have been a player that they saw more in than other people did, so they added him to the practice squad for further development.
Eddie Williams, FB
The Bears didn’t carry a fullback on the active roster this year, opting to have four tight ends instead. If any one of those guys gets hurt, it’s possible that the Bears could elevate Williams to the active roster to fill in as an H-Back (which is currently manned by Desmond Clark). This was a smart move by the Bears in keeping some kind of backup at the fullback position, just in case.
Edwin Williams, C/G
Williams was signed by the Bears just last week and does have some starting experience. He was brought back on the practice squad, where hopefully the Bears will develop him into someone that could come in as a backup if needed. He does have some limited starting experience, which is a plus. It will be interesting to see what the Bears decide to do with Williams in the future.
J.D. Folsom, LB
The Bears went outside of the organization to add Folsom to the practice squad. Folsom was drafted by the Miami Dolphins last year and will help add depth to the linebacker group. Look to see more of him next summer in training camp.
UPDATE: Former Chicago Bears quarterback Dan LeFevour was signed by the Cincinnati Bengals while former defensive end/tackle Jarron Gilbert was signed to the New York Jets practice squad.
