Wow.

On the day that Josh McDaniels was shown the door by the Denver Broncos, the ghost of the 2007 season’s past showed up on Monday Night Football.  If you miss the reference—Josh McDaniels, 31 at the time, was the offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots in their year of utter domination—minus that whole “winning it all” thing.

However, this 2010 Patriots team isn’t beating you up with bombs to Randy Moss. They’re doing it with a solid running attack, and possession receivers.  They’re beating people up with clock killing drives. Morale killing drives.

And to that I say, “Have fun with that Chicago Bears.”

The Bears, 9-3, coming off a classic trap game which they won, host the New England Patriots this Sunday at 3:15 p.m. at Soldier Field.  The last time the Bears faced an opponent coming off such an utterly dominating performance was, well, two weeks ago.

The Philadelphia Eagles embarrassed the Washington Redskins 59-28 on Nov. 15.  On Nov. 22 they took care of the Giants, and the following week came into Chicago.  While the Eagles did only lose by a touchdown, they were completely dominated by the Bears in all phases of the game.

The Bears have shown they can take the supposed best the NFC has to offer and dominate them.

Now it’s time to turn to the AFC.

The Patriots are coming to town—Tom Brady and his flowing locks.  Belichick and his sleeveless hoodie will lead the 32nd ranked defense (though that should improve with tonight’s dominating performance) into the sure-to-be-frozen and half-unplayable surface that is Soldier Field. 

The last time these two teams met was in the Bears’ 2006-07 Super Bowl season; an early turnover fest ended up with New England securing a win on a last-minute Rex Grossman interception.  Never heard that one before.

So here it is, Bears.  You want the rest of the league to understand how good you think you are?  You want people to quit doubting your abilities as a team?  Do you want people to take your “franchise” quarterback seriously?  It’s all there for the taking.

On a side note, there will be a very special guest in the seats during Sunday’s game.  Staff Sergeant Salvatore Giunta.  If you don’t know who he is, why don’t you go and Google him and read as much as you can about him. 

If you’re too busy for that—Salvatore Giunta is the first living recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor since Vietnam.

While serving in Afghanistan, Sal Giunta charged an enemy position after his platoon was ambushed.  While under heavy fire he recovered the body of a fallen soldier who was being dragged away by the Taliban. 

Sal Giunta is a Chicago Bears fan.

So to the Chicago Bears, remember this and keep some perspective: All you have to do is beat the New England Patriots—no one’s asking for heroics.
