Chicago Bears: Is the Team a Piece Away or Does It Need to Rebuild?

After having watched the Chicago Bears over the course of the past few games, it’s hard to imagine this team needs to take a step back and rebuild.  The Bears have been winning games—convincingly, for the most part—and appear to have what it takes to make the playoffs.

But the Bears could have been more competitive in the games they lost earlier this year (against the Packers, Lions and Saints) had they had a couple of pieces to a winning puzzle in place.  These pieces are easy for any fan of the Bears to see, and if the Bears had them it’s possible they could be undefeated right now.

The first piece of the puzzle the Bears need would be to have an effective wide receiver that is described as a true No. 1 threat in the passing game, which would do wonders for them on offense.  Imagine having someone like Larry Fitzgerald, Greg Jennings or even Calvin Johnson on the team—what a difference that would make. It would give them the threat that they need in the passing game and would make their passing game much better.

Another piece to the puzzle the Bears could use is a strong left tackle.  Granted, J’Marcus Webb is holding his own at the left tackle position right now, but the Bears could use a slam-dunk player at the position.  Everyone knows the left tackle position is the foundation for a great or not-so-great offensive line, and having a strong player at the left tackle position would go a long way towards making the Bears offensive line strong.  Perhaps next year they will either find that Webb is going to be good enough to hold his own at the position or they may try to find a new left tackle through the draft or in free agency.

Finally, one last position that the Bears could really use some help with is the safety position.  While this position hasn’t been much of a problem over the last few games, how much better could the Bears be if they had a safety like Mike Brown (without the injuries) or a guy like Ed Reed (how he used to be)?  Having that hard-hitting kind of player that could cover receivers very well would do wonders for the Bears and would help stabilize one of the most important positions on the team.

This team does not need to rebuild.  It’s doing very well with what it has, although it could still use a few players to help make things better on the team.  A few players in the right places could give this team the playmakers it needs to become a tougher-to-beat team that can win games similar to the way that the Green Bay Packers have been winning games.

No team is without their faults and there is no team in the NFL that couldn’t use some good players at certain positions.  The Bears are one of those teams but they are doing well with what they have right now.  They just could enhance things by adding players in positions mentioned above and make the team even better.
