The Chicago Bears currently have five defensive ends under contract.

Veteran ends Julius Peppers and Israel Idonije are the starters, while Chauncey Davis, Corey Wootton and Thaddeus Gibson are the backups on the roster.

Davis was signed to a two-year deal following a Week 10 win over the Detroit Lions, replacing rotational end Nick Reed.

In six games last season, the 29-year-old Davis recorded nine tackles and one sack as the fourth defensive end.

He racked up four tackles in his first game as a Bear in Week 12 against Oakland. Two weeks later against Denver, he made three tackles and one sack.

He has the potential to be a major contributor for this team next year. He has been solid as a run stopper in his seven seasons in the NFL. He has 187 tackles and 11 sacks in his NFL career.

Third-year pro Corey Wootton has plenty of potential, but hasn’t been able to stay healthy in his first two seasons in the league.

With that said, Davis has a chance in his second season in Chicago to be a big part of the rotation at defensive end.

The Bears have the 19th selection in this month’s draft. Defensive end could be where the Bears decide to go. But cornerback, wide receiver and offensive tackle are also areas of need for them.
