Chicago Bears: Recap of Their 31-3 Loss to the Denver Broncos

It’s tough to worry too much about the results of this game given how few starters were involved.
After all, no Urlacher and no Peppers pretty much de-fangs the Bears defense and no Cutler and no Forte didn’t make the offense very potent.
Still there was some worthwhile notes to jot down as we watched the 31-3 loss to the Denver Broncos.
Positives:
Alshon Jeffery
Matt Miller was happy and Alshon Jeffery looked good in limited action. He wasn’t out of shape, he wasn’t lost.
He made some good plays and a few shaky ones, but overall you had to like what you saw.
It may take a bit, but I still contend this is a guy who will be a big part of the offense by midseason.
Again, not a lot to go on, but I liked what little I saw from Campbell Thursday night and feel confident that in the event of a Cutler injury, he can hold serve.
He’s not spectacular but he plays well and was a great addition to this offense.
Shea McClellin
After the last few weeks, I don’t care what squad it happened against, McClellin getting three tackles and a sack was a great step forward.
He still looks a little confused at times but he is definitely progressing and should be a great role player at the very least this year.
The Meh
Well, Michael Bush didn’t have a great night—three carries for two yards and a lost fumble? Yuck. Still it was a tiny sample size and nothing to worry about.
Overall, the defense wasn’t anything to write home about, though, again, Peppers’ and Urlacher’s absence was felt.
Major Wright had a nice interception but left the game with a hamstring injury.
Negatives:
Offense
Overall you can’t love an offense which gets all of three points on the board. Nobody looked cohesive and sure, Jay Cutler wasn’t playing, but nothing looked in sync.
Take it with a grain of salt—it is, after all, just one preseason game.
Left Tackle
J’Marcus Webb wasn’t awful but his play left something to be desired. In fact, you could label this not so much left tackle but offensive line.
Six sacks—no matter what line is in—is too much and a concern.
There’s more work to do here.
No Pass Rush
At least early on, there wasn’t much pressure against Peyton Manning and, I’m sorry Denver, but the offensive line isn’t that good.
Again, they lacked their key defensive guys but I would have thought someone could have stepped up and they really didn’t.
Overall, despite the score, it wasn’t a horrible outing, but the Bears are hoping for much better if they want to make a run at the division title and a perhaps a Super Bowl.
