The Bears won an unlikely battle of the backup quarterbacks. Josh McCown threw two touchdowns while Matt Forte had a valiant effort on the ground with 125 yards and a touchdown.

Final Analysis for the Chicago Bears

Passing Offense: Josh McCown took care of the football, and give some major credit to his offensive line, which was outstanding in pass-blocking all game. Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery’s size near the goal line was a matchup nightmare. 

Passing Defense: The defensive line finally showed up in a major way. Shea McClellin had the biggest impact on the game early with his sack on Aaron Rodgers. Julius Peppers had his best game of the season. 

Rushing Offense: Matt Forte was outstanding in the second half. He kept the chains moving and virtually ran out the clock in the fourth quarter. Great job by the receivers on the outside blocking for Forte. 

Rushing Defense: The Bears did a much better job of slowing down Eddie Lacy in the second half. Still, there was poor tackling and gap management, most noticeably by the safeties. 

Special Teams: Two large impact plays shed a negative light on special teams. The onside kick in the second half was a result of a unit snoozing against a team desperate for a spark. 

Coaching: Marc Trestman let his quarterback throw the ball while Mel Tucker dared the Packers’ quarterback to do the same. Both worked out very well in the end. Extra points to Trestman for going for it on fourth down in his own zone to seal the victory. 

First-Half Analysis for the Chicago Bears

Passing Offense: Josh McCown is looking very…Aaron Rodgers-like? He’s moved around well in the pocket and made solid throws and very good decisions. Nice job by Marc Trestman to trust McCown early and let him get into a rhythm. 

Passing Defense: Once Aaron Rodgers exited the game, the secondary was able to play press coverage and give Seneca Wallace very little room to throw the football. Nice job by the defensive line to bring some much-needed pressure.

Rushing Offense: The passing game really opened up some lanes for Matt Forte in the second quarter. It will be interesting to see if he can break one in the second half. 

Rushing Defense: The first couple of possessions were a disaster for the linebackers and defensive tackles. Being able to put eight in the box and play containment on the ends has really taken the pressure off those young linebackers and tackles. 

Special Teams: This unit continues to struggle. Too often they give up the big play rather than create one. This is a ball game out of reach if that blocked punt doesn’t happen. 

Coaching: Great job by Trestman to have confidence in McCown and allow him to be aggressive. Mel Tucker was able to adjust to the Rodgers injury and bring more pressure. Joe DeCamillis still has some work to do.
