Desperately seeking answers for a defense that’s been among the NFL‘s worst over the last two years, the Chicago Bears have scored a coup by hiring Vic Fangio to be their new defensive coordinator. The Bears confirmed the move:

According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, Fangio’s decision came down to Chicago and Washington:

La Canfora also noted on Twitter that he expects another former San Francisco coach to join Fangio in Chicago:

Even though he doesn’t play defense, Bears offensive lineman Kyle Long approved of Fangio joining the coaching staff:

Fangio spent the last four seasons on Jim Harbaugh’s staff with the 49ers. Under his guidance, San Francisco never ranked worse than fifth in yards allowed and 10th in points allowed. He was released from his contract with the team after Jim Tomsula was hired as head coach.

Even though Fangio is walking into a situation with considerably less talent on defense than he had in San Francisco, he’s proved to be a master of maximizing his players’ abilities.

The 49ers still had one of the league’s best defenses in 2014, despite being without Patrick Willis, NaVorro Bowman, Aldon Smith and Glenn Dorsey for most of the year.

The Bears have focused on getting coaches who have strong defensive backgrounds, starting with the hiring of John Fox as head coach. Fangio’s resume is among the best in the sport, and he should make an immediate impact for a team that needed to make drastic changes to improve in 2015.
