2010 Fantasy Football: Week 6 Start ‘Em, Sit ‘Em: The Quarterbacks

The bye weeks are upon us with the Cardinals, Bills, Panthers and Bengals off in Week 6.

There aren’t any standout quarterbacks amongst those teams so there should be plenty of solid quarterback production this week.

Start ‘Em

Vince Young, Titans at Jaguars

With Young, you know it’s 50/50 as to whether he helps or hurts you. It’s no surprise that Young has been up and down in 2010, with three respectable fantasy performances and a pair of stinkers.

However, the bye weeks are upon us and if injuries and just plain old bad drafting have you needing a fill in, Young is a decent option in Week 6.

The Titans face a Jaguars pass defense that ranks 29th in the league and have given up more fantasy points per game than any other team.

Matt Cassel, Chiefs at Texans

Sure, he’s the 28th ranked fantasy quarterback. Yes, his receivers seem to have a hard time getting open and catching the ball, and yes, asking them to do both things on the same play is extremely tricky.

But this week, the task is made easier because the Chiefs get to face a Texans secondary that ranks last in the league in passing defense and has given up more fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks than any other team.

It’s a dream matchup for Cassel at exactly the right time and just the right opponent to pad his 163 passing yards per game average.

Jay Cutler, Bears vs. Seahawks

Word is out that Cutler has been cleared to practice and that he will be able to go this week, barring any setbacks.

It’s a plum time to return for the beleaguered Bears quarterback.

The Seahawks rank third in the league in run defense but 31st against the pass. It’s not like offensive coordinator Mike Martz needs a reason to chuck it all over the field but this week, he has one.

Even the Bears shaky offensive line should be able to keep Cutler clean against a Seahawks front seven that lacks pass rushers.

Chad Henne, Dolphins at Packers

Henne hasn’t been great this year but the Dolphins are coming off their bye so they have had two weeks to game plan for the Packers and get Henne straightened out.

Although the Dolphins go on the road to Green Bay, they will face a banged up Packers secondary that gave up 357 yards and a touchdown last week to Donovan McNabb of the Redskins.

The Packers will be without starting strong safety Atari Bigby, nickelback Sam Shields has concussion issues and they have three secondary players on IR, including Bigby’s replacement Morgan Burnett.

Look for Henne to put together a strong game this week.

Sit ‘Em

Shaun Hill, Lions

Hill has had a solid run replacing Matthew Stafford in the Lions starting line-up averaging 283 passing yards per game and two touchdowns during his four-week run as the Lions starter.

However, the task gets much harder this week against a stout Giants passing defense. The Giants shut down the Texans potent passing attack last week, limiting Matt Schaub to 196 yards and no touchdowns.

With Calvin Johnson not likely to be 100% and a tough matchup, this might be the end of Hill’s successful string of solid games.

Josh Freeman, Bucs at Saints

Freeman has been surprisingly solid thus far in 2010, following up a strong preseason with some solid, if not spectacular, play that has the Bucs at 3-1.

This week, he faces a Saints passing defense that ranks seventh in the league and which gave him fits during his rookie season.

In two games against the Saints last year, Freeman went 38 of 64 for 397 yards with one touchdown and five interceptions.

He certainly has improved his ability to read defenses but the Saints need a win in this one and Freeman may be in for a rough ride.
