2012 NFL Free Agents: Chicago Bears Must Sign Matt Forte for Super Bowl Chase

Chicago acquired Pro Bowl wide receiver Brandon Marshall this week for draft picks. They still have a draft pick in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft. Their defense is stout; Jay Cutler, when healthy, is a legitimate quarterback in the NFL.

Everything is set up for a great Bears season. There is just one thing: Chicago hasn’t re-signed Matt Forte.

If the Bears plan on returning to the Super Bowl they must re-sign Forte.

First of all, Forte deserves to get paid. He’s one of the best dual running backs in the league. In just 12 games last season, Forte rushed for 997 yards and three touchdowns. He caught 52 passes for 490 yards and one touchdown.

Forte is a player capable of getting the Bears 1,600 yards of total offense.

What’s not to like?

At 26, Forte still is a few years away from that 30 mark for running backs. He’s still capable of playing big for the Bears if they give him an opportunity.

Chicago was 7-3 with Cutler before he went down with an injury. That performance came one year after making it to the NFC Championship Game.

The Bears are close.

Bringing in Marshall will finally give Cutler a true No. 1 receiver. His chemistry with Marshall was strong in Denver and will continue to be strong in Chicago. Marshall and maybe a Michael Floyd in the draft would give Cutler two fantastic weapons at his disposal.

Forte would be another weapon defenses would have to game plan for.

Signing Forte makes sense for the Bears.

Chicago is close to being a Super Bowl contender. Adding Forte to the puzzle would give them the correct pieces to contend next season.
