A Closer Look at the Chicago Bears’ Coaching Staff: The Offense

We all know that the Bears’ coaching staff underwent some changes during the offseason after the teamed purged a majority of their offensive coaching staff to bring in new talent.  The biggest coaching acquisition this offseason was former St. Louis Rams’ head coach Mike Martz. Martz is sure to bring a powerful passing attack to Chicago and his offenses promise to put up a lot of yards and hopefully a lot of points.

The question is, does he have the personnel to do it?

We shall soon find out, but things should be better on offense this season than they have had in recent years. Another new face on the team this year is offensive line coach Mike Tice. Like Martz, Tice has spent some time in as an NFL head coach and knows a lot about the league and its players.

Although he was limited with talent in Jacksonville (his last stop), he did help make that unit stronger despite the disadvantages he was faced with. In Chicago, he may have less talent to work with, but he will get something more out of this group and they should be able to play better than they have in the past.

Mike DeBoard will run the tight end group this year, his first with the Bears. DeBoard, formerly with the Seahawks, has helped mold John Carlson into a decent NFL tight end.

The hopes in Chicago rest on not only making sure that the tight ends will keep catching passes, but also block. In fact, the Bears’ tight ends will block much more than they have in the past. DeBoard has his work cut out for him.

Coaching the running backs this season will be Tim Spencer. Spencer has done a good job with the running backs, for the most part and should have a much easier job now that the Bears have Chester Taylor. It will be interesting to see how he coaches this group in the 2010 season.

Darryl Drake returns as the wide receivers coach this year much to the surprise of many that thought that he would have been let go with the purge the Bears went through shortly after the season ended last year. However, he remains with the team and has the daunting task of helping his wide receivers learn the new offense that Martz has brought to the Bears. Let’s just hope he is up to the task because this group is going to need a lot of help picking the offense up and making plays.

Shane Day is new to the Bears this season having replaced the departed Pep Hamilton.  Day will get the opportunity to work with quarterback Jay Cutler and help him develop in the new system that has been brought to Chicago. Hopefully, he will end up being a much more active participant with Cutler than Hamilton was. Last year, it seems as if Cutler wasn’t too interested in what Hamilton was trying to tell him. Let’s hope he is much more interested in what Day has to say in 2010.

The offensive coaching staff has seen a lot of turnover in the past year and unless the Bears get things together on that side of the ball this year, there could be wholesale changes in 2010. Martz promises to bring a lot of fire to the Bear’s offense, especially their passing game so assistant coaches are going to be particularly important when it comes to coaching their guys in the nuances of this offense. It’s traditionally been a complicated system so having a good position coach will really help the individual players out a lot.
