Alshon Jeffery, Brandon Marshall’s Instant Fantasy Reaction After Week 5

Fantasy owners who drafted Alshon Jeffery and Brandon Marshall this season probably spent early draft picks on the Chicago Bears receiving duo and have high expectations. Sunday’s efforts from Jeffery worked for fantasy owners, but Marshall is likely becoming a source of frustration.

Here are their final numbers from Sunday:

Thus far, nagging injuries have prevented both from truly breaking out, although each has shined at certain moments in 2014. Jeffery had a touchdown in the first half Sunday against the Carolina Panthers, and Marshall did have that three-touchdown game against the San Francisco 49ers earlier in the year.

Still, Marshall was held in check for the third straight game in Week 5. Fantasy owners are right to be frustrated, especially with Marshall battling through an ankle injury that may hamper his future value.

Jeffery did break through with 105 receiving yards against the Jets and scored his first touchdown of the year in the game with the Packers, so there is reason for optimism there. That is especially the case since Jeffery put together another solid game Sunday.

Jeffery looks like a top-notch receiving option yet again.

On paper, Marshall and Jeffery are nearly as safe as it comes in fantasy football, but the production has been up-and-down all year. The statistics should reach a more consistent level if and when they both are fully healthy again (Jeffery appears to be at that point), but fantasy owners are growing somewhat inpatient with Marshall.

The fact that Marshall only had five targets in Week 5 after seeing only six the past two games is the most worrisome stat of all. If Jay Cutler doesn’t start looking Marshall’s way in the future, the wide receiver could lose his designation as a No. 1 option in fantasy football.

We are not suggesting you bench the superstar by any stretch of the imagination, but you need consistent targets and yardage every week in fantasy football. Owners just aren’t getting that from Marshall.
