The lasting impression from Thursday night’s contest may be that Chicago can’t throw the ball. That is just a rush to irrational thought. Do not jump to dump Alshon Jeffery.
Jay Cutler is known for being a streaky player, and he had three games of under 210 yards passing last year. However, Jeffery has already shown that he can make the big play and will be an important cog in the Chicago Bears offense.
Jeffery’s stock will increase throughout the season, but right now his value is as WR3 or WR4 on your team. The smart money says to hang on to him and see if he can become Jay Cutler’s second-favorite target (or third if you count opposing secondaries.)
Analysis:
The Bears offense was terrible in Thursday night’s 23-10 loss to the Green Bay Packers, and will likely struggle again at times this season. Jay Cutler is simply too inconsistent for fantasy owners to rely on, and that makes his receivers just as unreliable.
However, Brandon Marshall is going to draw the attention of the defense more often than not, and Jeffrey’s catches are only going to go up as he adjusts to the speed of the NFL.
His touchdown in Week 1 was a great sign, and while Week 2 was a setback for the entire Chicago offense, there are clear signs that Jeffery is a player worth at least keeping on your bench for now.
Start/Sit in Week 3:
Playing against the St. Louis Rams in Week 3 means a likely matchup with former SEC rival Janoris Jenkins.
Jeffery is not going to see too many matchups against fellow rookies this season, and with Marshall busy trying to get around Cortland Finnegan all game, this decision becomes easy.
