And with the 45th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Chicago Bears select Alshon Jeffrey.
Chicago traded their second-round pick and their 5th round pick to move up 5 spots with the St. Louis Rams to select the South Carolina receiver with the 45th overall pick.
And Jay Cutler‘s admiration for Phil Emery grows even more. Cutler said in an interview on the Waddle and Silvy show “Anyone really over 6-2 at this point is going to look good.”
The Bears didn’t just get one receiver over 6’2″. They got two.
And after years of going through receivers like Marty Booker, Roy Williams and Mark Bradley, Chicago finally has the weapons at receiver to scare defences.
Jeffrey is a confusing player, who the NFL Network compared to Marques Colston of the New Orleans Saints. Poor quarterback play at South Carolina hurt his draft stock yet he still showed enough to merit a first-round grade.
Concerns about his weight forced him to drop out of the first round, but the Bears moved up to make sure he didn’t fall past the 45th pick.
Jeffrey came into tonight as one of my top-20 available players and only lasted 13 picks.
He is a tall receiver listed at 6’4″ who had a down year in production this year through no fault of his own. In 2010, he had 88 receptions for over 1,500 yards and 9 touchdowns. He was voted all SEC alongside Julio Jones that year
If Jeffrey can shine like he did back in 2010, the Bears just locked up their second new opening day starter.
