Soldier Field in Chicago can be a tough place for opponents to play, but the Chicago Bears haven’t been making much of their supposed home-field advantage lately, going just 1-8-1 ATS in their last 10 home games.

Chicago backers hope the Bears can shake that trend off when the Baltimore Ravens hit the Windy City Sunday.

Point spread:
Bears opened as four-point favorites, but were bet to 2.5 points by Wednesday; the total was 47. (Line updates and Matchup report)

Odds Shark computer says:
23.9-22.6 Bears

Why the Ravens can cover the spread

The defending Super Bowl champs are off to a slow start this season and just about blew a game Sunday against Cincinnati. But Baltimore won in OT and can now get back to .500 with a victory this Sunday. By the numbers, the Ravens don’t look like much, but at least their defense can say it’s keeping the team in games, allowing just 21 points per outing.

The Ravens face a Bears team that has been a disaster against the spread at home (1-8-1 ATS in its past 10 games, according to the NFL database at Odds Shark).

Why the Bears can cover the spread

Regardless of who’s been at quarterback, Chicago has been able to move the ball. The Bears, with one of the better wide receiver combos in the game and dual-threat RB Matt Forte, rank 10th in total offense and third in scoring, averaging 29 points per game. Also, Chicago is already 2-0 this year against the AFC North.

Smart Pick

Odds Shark’s NFL computer is predicting a Chicago victory but a Baltimore cover in a game that will just sneak UNDER on the total. It looks like Josh McCown is back in at QB for da Bears, in place of the again-injured Jay Cutler, but that’s OK. In parts of three games this year, McCown owns a 102 rating and hasn’t yet thrown an interception. The Ravens just won a close game, while Chicago lost one. Expect a reversal this week.

Trends

  • Past four meetings all played UNDER the total.
  • Bears just 1-5-2 ATS past eight home games.
  • Bears are 1-8-1 ATS past 10 home games.
