Bears Could Make a Change at Tight End & More NFC North News

Vaughn McClure of the Tribune says that with the Kellen Davis’ struggles and inconsistent play, rookie Evan Rodriguez might finally get a shot at starting, or at least some snaps.

Rodriguez is listed as a fullback, but he’s really one of those hybrid tight end types (think Chris Cooley) who can be trusted to do a lot of different things and brings a physicality to his play that Davis seems to lack.

I liked Davis a bunch coming into this season, as we were finally looking at an offensive scheme that seemed to realize that, hey, you can throw to the tight end!

However, Davis hasn’t consistently performed and clearly Lovie Smith and Mike Tice are looking for someone to step in and make a difference.

It will be interesting to see how this looks when it happens, especially if Jay Cutler is out due to his concussion and Jason Campbell is throwing the ball.

Campbell definitely won’t have the chemistry with Brandon Marshall that Cutler has, so whoever gets involved could make a huge difference in how the Bears are able to move the ball against the San Francisco 49ers.

Rodriguez is a hardworking, tough player who could also really be an asset blocking on both pass and run plays.

Davis had his chance to make the starting tight end job his permanently, but hasn’t been able to do it. Maybe Rodriguez can be part of a spark to get this offense going earlier on in the game.

Something that would make it very difficult for the 49ers to pull off a win.

On to the rest of the NFC North.

Chicago Bears

ESPNChicago.com’s Jeff Dickerson takes a look at five things we learned from the loss to Houston.

Over at the Sun-Times, Rick Morrissey says anyone saying Lovie Smith wasn’t worried about Cutler’s concussion is off base.

Chicago Tribune columnist Dan Pompei says the offensive line proved itself against a very tough Houston pass rush.

Detroit Lions

Justin Rogers of MLive.com says the Lions are moving a lot of things around to try and fix the secondary.

The Detroit News’ Bob Wojnowski says that it’s now or never for the Lions.

According to Carlos Monarrez of the Detroit Free Press, Lions coach Jim Schwartz isn’t saying Harrison Smith tried to hurt Calvin Johnson, just that he might have been trying to hurt Calvin Johnson.

Green Bay Packers

Jayme Joers dusts off her crystal ball at CheeseheadTV.com to give us an idea of how the NFC North will play out as we head towards the last leg of the season.

The Journal-Sentinel’s Tyler Dunne writes that the injury to Bryan Bulaga is one the Packers feel across the team.

Weston Hodiewicz of the Press-Gazette says that with Clay Matthews out, Vic So’oto returns and will have a chance to gain a big role.

Minnesota Vikings

It’s Tuesday and that means ESPN 1500’s Tom Pelissero has the tape breakdown of this weekend’s game.

In case you thought the process for the new stadium was going too smoothly, Doug Beldon of the Pioneer Press reports that Minnesota’s governor is very unhappy with the idea of PSLs.

Kent Youngblood and Dan Wiederer of the Star-Tribune say that rookie Jarius Wright hopes he can stay in the active roster when Percy Harvin is healthy after the bye week.
