Bears Could Make a Change at Tight End & More NFC North News

Vaughn McClure of the Tribune says that with the Kellen Davis’ struggles and inconsistent play, rookie Evan Rodriguez might finally get a shot at starting, or at least some snaps.
Rodriguez is listed as a fullback, but he’s really one of those hybrid tight end types (think Chris Cooley) who can be trusted to do a lot of different things and brings a physicality to his play that Davis seems to lack.
I liked Davis a bunch coming into this season, as we were finally looking at an offensive scheme that seemed to realize that, hey, you can throw to the tight end!
However, Davis hasn’t consistently performed and clearly Lovie Smith and Mike Tice are looking for someone to step in and make a difference.
It will be interesting to see how this looks when it happens, especially if Jay Cutler is out due to his concussion and Jason Campbell is throwing the ball.
Campbell definitely won’t have the chemistry with Brandon Marshall that Cutler has, so whoever gets involved could make a huge difference in how the Bears are able to move the ball against the San Francisco 49ers.
Rodriguez is a hardworking, tough player who could also really be an asset blocking on both pass and run plays.
Davis had his chance to make the starting tight end job his permanently, but hasn’t been able to do it. Maybe Rodriguez can be part of a spark to get this offense going earlier on in the game.
Something that would make it very difficult for the 49ers to pull off a win.
