Bears Make Right Move Playing Josh McCown over Caleb Hanie

The Chicago Bears season just took another sad turn as head coach Lovie Smith has named John McCown the starting quarterback over Caleb Hanie.
All of this mess is directly related to Jay Cutler’s thumb injury and the Bears lack of depth at the quarterback position. While there have been reports that Cutler will try to play before the end of the season, if he can’t tough it out this week then there is no reason to do it next week.
It doesn’t matter who is under center for the Bears at this point because of the poor offensive line play and a lack of a run game with the injury to Matt Forte, but it’s the right choice to go with McCown at this point.
While Hanie didn’t look terrible in his first start with the Bears, it was obvious from the second week that this train was heading off the tracks. After an abysmal three interception game against the Seattle Seahawks, Smith and the coaching staff had no choice but to start McCown.
Bears beat writer for the Chicago Tribune Brad Biggs is reporting on twitter:
Will it matter?
No, but to allow Hanie to continue to start would have been a slap to the face of his players that are still trying to win and the fan base that is backing them up.
The change was necessary, but this week’s game against the Green Bay Packers on Christmas day has all the makings of a blowout loss by the Bears. The new quarterback and the idea of playing on Christmas will have players mailing it in left and right, making this move irrelevant.
As bad as Hanie has been, Bears fans should not be so excited over McCown. Hanie is a better quarterback overall than McCown so if fans or management expects anything but the output Hanie provided, they will be sorely mistaken.
At the end of the day, whether its McCown or Hanie, it just proves that the Chicago Bears don’t make great personnel decisions.
