According to an email sent out by the Chicago Bears media department to myself and others on Saturday afternoon, the organization has reached an agreement with Mike Groh to be the team’s wide receiver coach.
Groh was the wide receivers coach at the University of Alabama for the last two seasons, as well as the team’s recruiting coordinator. He won three national championships at Alabama, once in 2009 as a graduate assistant and in back-to-back seasons in 2011 and 2012. He also spent one season at Louisville in 2010 as the quarterbacks coach.
From 2001-08, Groh was a coach at his alma mater, the University of Virginia. During his first two seasons coaching the Cavaliers, he oversaw the wide receivers (2001-02). In 2003, he worked with both the wide receivers and quarterbacks. Over the next two years, Groh focused on coaching Virginia’s signal-callers (2004-05) before being promoted to offensive coordinator—a title he held for three seasons.
He got his start in coaching in 2000 as an offensive assistant/quality control coach for the New York Jets.
During his collegiate playing career, Groh was a two-year (1994-95) starting quarterback at Virginia and is the only signal-caller in school history to lead the Cavaliers to nine wins and a bowl victory in consecutive seasons.
Groh is the son of former New York Jets head coach Al Groh.
