In a more than mild shocker, the Vikings today upgraded Brett Favre to “questionable” status following his latest workout, which could mean that the future Hall of Famer may not have played his last game in the NFL.
While third string QB Joe Webb is still expected to start tonight against the Bears, there is now a sudden possibility that Favre could play. How well he would play is another matter entirely as he has a partial shoulder separation and assorted bumps and bruises befitting a 40-year-old QB on his last legs.
But with the college stadium venue and the expected bad weather and frozen field, this news adds yet another layer of complexity to the Bears game plan.
Until now, it was widely assumed that if Webb got hurt or was ineffective, that newly signed Patrick Ramsey would back him up. Now, there is the distinct possibility that Favre may yet get another opportunity to play.
Why would Favre risk his future ability to walk away from the game of pro football in one piece to play in a meaningless game (at least for Minnesota) on a frozen field? Well, consider that interim coach Leslie Frazier would love to have the guy that gives him the best chance to win on the field, and despite his injuries, that is probably Favre.
Once Favre’s consecutive games played streak ended, it was almost a lock that we had seen the last of the former Packers QB. But the news today throws a monkey wrench into those assumptions.
The Bears can win the division by beating the Vikings Monday night but it now appears that a win is not a given.
Sure, the Bears are nine point favorites, but the news about Favre, combined with the prediction of snow and the rock-hard field, all combine to make this a possible upset special.
Look, Favre deserves the right to play if he can do it, and in truth it may not be the best option for Minny, given his health. But one has to wonder if the veteran would be better able to handle the conditions on the field given his experience and years playing in Green Bay.
Well, if nothing else, it’s just another interesting sideline to a game that is already full of interesting sidelines.
