Brandon Marshall Lands with Chicago Bears in Steal of a Deal

The Chicago Bears announced Tuesday that they have acquired Brandon Marshall from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for two third-round draft picks, in a trade that ESPN senior writer Michael Smith called “highway robbery.”
Marshall has played the last two seasons with the Dolphins, after starting his career in Denver alongside current Bears quarterback Jay Cutler.
In each of the past five seasons, Marshall has come away with over 1,000 yards receiving. He is one of only three current receivers to hold this distinction—the others being Arizona’s Larry Fitzgerald and Atlanta’s Roddy White.
This trade makes for a bold opening statement from first-year general manager Phil Emery, and is a possible game-changer for a Bears team whose front office has let them down in the past. The red-hot 2011 Bears saw their playoff hopes vanish in November and December, due to the front office’s inability and/or unwillingness to find a serviceable backup quarterback after Jay Cutler was injured.
Now, with a healthy Cutler, an active GM and the big-time receiver they needed, the Bears will seek to recapture the fire they showed during their 2011 five-game win streak.
Marshall will give the Bears the playmaking possession wideout they have lacked in the past, which should help open things up downfield for fellow receiver Johnny Knox and take some of the pressure off running back Matt Forte.
