Somewhere in Bristol, Connecticut there is a loud alarm sounding that can be heard throughout the state. It’s ESPN’s headquarters calling all hands on deck to cover a possible Brett Favre return to the Chicago Bears.
At least Brett’s interested; we’ll have to see if Chicago is as well. Let the obsessive coverage begin.
Putting the circus aside, Favre is the best chance for the Bears to save their season. Clearly Caleb Hanie doesn’t have enough to bring Chicago to the playoffs and there are very few options left.
Donovan McNabb‘s name has been floated around and while it would be less of a circus atmosphere bringing him in, McNabb hasn’t been a winner in years. He’s clearly lost whatever he had and it’s been gone for quite some time now.
Favre, on the other hand, comes off a bad season in 2010 filled with injuries, namely to his throwing shoulder that cost him a few games of his season and ended his consecutive games streak. Ultimately, it was a concussion that ended his season.
But don’t forget that the year before that, Favre was an MVP candidate.
Now with almost a year not having played a football game, Favre’s had time to heal his wounds and return to as good a form as possible for a 41-year-old quarterback who’s started more games in a row than any NFL player in history.
I still think that’s better than McNabb.
One of the biggest arguments against this move is the fact that he’d have to learn Mike Martz’s complicated offense in a short period of time—too short for anyone to think it’s possible.
Here’s how it’s possible: Simplify it.
I know the full extent of Martz’s mad genius attitude towards running an offense because I’m a St. Louis Rams fan. But if he cares enough about winning and less about ego, he can give his team the best chance to win should Chicago choose Favre at quarterback.
If the playoffs started today, the Bears would be the fifth seed and be up against the Dallas Cowboys. Obviously it isn’t too late to save this season and make a run for the Super Bowl, so the Bears must help that cause at all costs.
I believe Favre is the one quarterback who can take them there. He’s the only one available who I think has enough ability to change this team’s fortunes.
