The third and perhaps last retirement of the legendary quarterback Brett Favre has come with much expected media attention.

Many feel that it is another ruse, or false retirement, and he will eventually report to Vikings camp close to the opening night of the season. Others feel that the injuries that have accumulated over the years, and during the beating he took at the hands of the Saints in the NFC Championship Game last season have finally caught up to the 40-year-old veteran.

There will be a sense of relief for Bears players and fans as Favre has reigned supremely over the division for the better part of two decades. Though the team has had some success against the future Hall-of-Famer since Lovie Smith came in as head coach, Brett Favre recorded the most wins against the Bears of any quarterback in the teams storied history.

Not only did Favre have great success against the Bears with a 23-11 record, he had games where he simply embarrassed the team, and the question of victory for the Packers was at times mere certainty.

No player of Favre’s generation continually dominated the Bears as commandingly as Brett did.

Barry Sanders had many outstanding and mesmerizing performances against the Bears for the Lions, but did not do it as often as Favre, and could not lead the Lions to many victories.

The Vikings had an offensive juggernaut that lasted for several years in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s with quarterbacks Randall Cunningham and Daunte Culpepper, along with wide receivers Moss, Carter, and Reed. This also did not have the enduring nature of conquest that Favre had over Chicago.

To take the dominance of No. 4 even further, it is hard to think of any athlete that has punished any professional team in Chicago like Favre did.

The White Sox have the “Pesky” Twins, The Cubs have “The Curse” and Albert Pujols, The Blackhawks had their own owner Bill Wirtz, and The Bulls had the “Bad Boy” Pistons before they burst through for their dynasty.

No one player tortured another team like Brett Favre did while with the Packers. Even last season, shades of the old days against the Bears could be seen.

In the Monday Night Game in which the Bears went on to win against Brett’s Vikings; Brett needed the game-tying touchdown pass to send the game into overtime. Being at the game last December no one in Soldier Field that had watched Bears football in the last nineteen years had any doubt that Favre wouldn’t convert the fourth down conversion that ended up being the touchdown pass to Sidney Rice.

In what may have been the last signature moment of the “Favre v. Bears” matchup, Brett should have gotten the last laugh in victory, but Adrian Peterson fumble issues surfaced and Minnesota got Aromashodu’ed.

But now, Brett appears to be done.

Most think that Favre will be back, and the T-JAX era will be further put on hold. If not, the Vikings will move forward with a good team. The Lions have what appears to be a solid franchise quarterback in Matthew Stafford, and the hated Packers have an elite top five quarterback in Aaron Rogers.

So the new era may be difficult in terms of these talented in-division QB’s, but no matter what there successes are against the Bears they will not measure up to the great Brett Favre.
