Brett Favre: Why Chicago Bears Must Ignore Him and Target Donovan McNabb

With Jay Cutler out, the Chicago Bears have a serious problem at the quarterback position. Try as he might, Caleb Hanie is not worthy of being a starting quarterback in the NFL and certainly not on a team making a push for the playoffs.

On Monday rumors surfaced that Brett Favre would be interested if the Bears reached out to him. Chicago was quick to deny any interest in the retired signal-caller and honestly a marriage between the two parties would make absolutely no sense. If Chicago was going to pick up a veteran quarterback, Donovan McNabb would be the best option.

While McNabb isn’t an ideal choice, this isn’t an ideal situation for the Bears. They need something at quarterback and Hanie clearly isn’t the solution. McNabb would at least give them a guy who could consistently complete passes. While he’s not what he used to be, McNabb did complete 60.3 percent of his throws in six games with the Vikings this season.

The six-time Pro Bowler had almost nothing to throw to with the Vikings and had to force throws and try to make plays. He’s not that kind of guy anymore. But still, even though he had to force things, he threw just two interceptions against his four touchdown passes.

McNabb’s quarterback rating this year was 82.9, which was certainly disappointing, but it was an average number.

McNabb has been there before, he’s been on playoff teams and he’s made players around him better in the past. I don’t think he is what he once was, but for a Bears team desperate for some kind of spark, he could be worth the risk.
