Can Chicago Bears Post a Winning Record?

Can the Chicago Bears post a winning record with Jay Culter leading the way? Cutler can get the Bears back to their winning ways. A better question would be will Cutler throw less than 20 interceptions this year? Cutler the guys in different jerseys than the one you are wearing do not and I repeat do not throw it to them. Cutler has a big arm and sometimes he is too confident that it will always get the ball through the tightest of windows. If the Bears can fix the problem by adding Julius Peppers to an already talented defense then expect the Bears to get to at least 10 wins this season.

Cutler throwing woes were not the only problem the Bears had to contend with last season. The offensive play calling was atrocious. With the hiring of Mike Martz as the new Offensive Coordinator, the play calling should greatly improve. Will Martz get too pass heavy on an offensive unit that has loads of speed at the wide receiver position, but the hands, well, lets just say, the catching ability needs to play catch up with the great speed mentioned earlier. Bears do not have a polished receiver or true No. 1 receiver. Devin Hester is a work in progress and the same goes for Johnny Knox. Peppers was a great addition, but it would have been great to get a high-caliber wide receiver to add to their mix.

Chicago saw their best defensive player in Brian Urlacher go down in the first game of last season with a dislocated risk. Urlacher is healthy and should be ready to step back in and be a dominant force on defense as he has been throughout his career. Now that opposing offenses will have to keep newly acquired, freakishly athletic Peppers off their quarterback, I would expect Urlacher’s sack total to increase. Lance Briggs would be another defensive nightmare for opposing teams with the arrival of Peppers. Peppers is a game changer, and he makes the Bears’ defense more dangerous than any defense in the NFC.

Matt Forte last season fell just short of eclipsing the 1,000 yard mark with 929 yards. Forte’s biggest problem was hanging onto the ball. Fumbling the ball six times during the season will never be good enough for your starting running back or any running back. If he can get it going it would help the Bears. Martz will have a lot to do with how often Forte will touch the ball. Martz likes to pass and that will definitely mean the running game numbers will be worse than last season. He must get Forte touches because I feel it will help Forte’s confidence.

Chicago finished 7-9 a year ago. I expect a better squad than last season. If Martz can create enough of a balance between the run and the pass, along with helping Culter minimize his interceptions then I expect the Bears to have a 10 win season. This season a 10-6 record just may leave the Bears watching others play during the playoffs. If the Bears do not make the playoffs or have a winning season then it will almost mean the end of Lovie Smith tenure as the Bears’ head xoach. Cutler must show better decision-making and that would be a giant leap in the right direction for the Bears to finish the season with a winning record.
