Chester Taylor and Matt Forte: The Dream Team?

The Bears signing of former Minnesota Vikings running back Chester Taylor brings Chicago into a new era that era being a two-back running game.
Chicago has used a single back rushing attack forever and now they are doing what a lot of teams in the NFL are doing and now they may end up featuring two running backs in their offense. They are able of doing this now because they have two very capable running backs who now pose a dual threat for any defense the Bears face.
If the Bears do end up using a two back system then why did it take so long? It’s simple, philosophy. No offensive coordinator or head coach has wanted to use the two back system in Chicago and it’s looking like they might give it a shot now. Chicago has also not had two running backs that could share the load on a consistent basis until now.
Both Taylor and Forte bring a lot to the table in how they can help the offense. First, both are very capable pass catchers. Since this offense will feature passes to running backs you need to be sure (as the offensive coordinator) that you have running backs that can not only catch the ball but also do something with it after they catch it. Both Taylor and Forte should have no problem in this area.
Of course, as a running back’s main job is to run the ball, both Forte and Taylor are fully capable of doing that but Taylor has not been an every down back and it will be interesting to see how he handles the anticipated increase in his workload. Forte didn’t have great numbers rushing the ball last season but with less predictability coming in the Bears’ offense, he should see his numbers get better.
In terms of blocking ability, Taylor is an accomplished blocker and should be able to function well in that capacity in the Bear’s offense. Forte has blocked before and has done well but still needs additional experience blocking. He will get that in this offense and should be able to excel as a blocker.
So has Chicago finally found the answer to a stagnant running and passing game now that they have both Taylor and Forte on board? The answer that is yes. With these two guys back there the Bears have a very strong chance of improving their running and passing game in the 2010 season and could help in making the difference for Chicago making the playoffs. It will be interesting to see how they perform in 2010.
