The Bears are going to need a shutdown defense in order to return to the playoffs in 2010.

With the Vikings and Packers in the same division, it’s hard to see the Bears beating them in record.

New Sheriff in Town

With Mike Martz running the offense, you know the Bears are going to be a throw first, run second team. The problem with Martz’s offense (Don Coryell offense) is that it is predicated on the receivers running precisely timed routes.

This works when you have Hall of Fame-type talents like Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt at receiver, but not so much with lesser players. Devin Aromashodu and company are decent young options, but they will probably leave Jay Cutler hanging from time to time by not getting to the football when needed.

Unfortunately, this should lead to another season where Cutler throws for a bunch of interceptions to go with his average mid-20 touchdowns and 3,500 yards passing.

In the running game, Matt Forte and Chester Taylor will be serviceable for their team but not great for fantasy football. In this offense, Forte isn’t going to get close to 20 touches every week, and fantasy owners will need that kind of workload for him to be an every-week player.

Return to Greatness

With the addition of ultra talent Julius Peppers and Brian Urlacher returning to the defense, the Bears have the potential for a strong defensive season. Sure, the defense may be hurt at times in field position when Cutler has a bad turnover game, but he will also give them leads in other games.

Because of this, the Bears make for a nice fantasy sleeper defense this season. They may not be an every-week fantasy play, but at times they should have some really good games.
