Struggling in pass protection early in the year, QB Jay Cutler did a great job of keeping the Chicago Bears in the playoff hunt in 2011.

Before his season-ending hand injury, Cutler was helped when then-offensive coordinator Mike Martz switched Cutler’s drops to more three- and five-step drops and throw passes.

While Cutler did the best he could with a below-average pass-blocking line and a below-average receiving core, star running back Matt Forte was having his best season since his rookie year.

Unfortunately, Forte also suffered a season-ending injury in December, and the Bears slipped out of the playoff hunt, unable to put points on the board.

Putting Issues Aside, Playing Football

While it appears that Martz wore out his welcome, it will be imperative that the Bears put off-field issues like Brandon Marshall’s antics and Forte’s contract situation aside, and focus on winning games.

Who knows if Forte reports to camp on time? But I can’t blame him if he misses time into the season after the team failed to sign him, instead opting to land Michael Bush as insurance.

Moves like this one didn’t sit well in the Eagles clubhouse last year, when stars failed to get their contracts, so let’s hope that cooler heads prevail, as this team is geared for a playoff run in 2012.
