Chicago Bears: Back-Page News, Just How They Like It

On every major sports website this past Sunday, the New York Jets graced the cover after their dismantling of the mighty New England Patriots. Yet nowhere to be found on those pages are the Chicago Bears, and that is just how they like it.
The Bears bashed the visiting Seattle Seahawks in all three phases of the game in their divisional round showdown at Soldier Field. But they were still second in the minds of the New York-driven media, always looking for excitement and controversy, rather than what occurs between the goal posts.
This injustice that the Bears have seemed to “suffer” through all year has been perfect for a coach, and a team, that sees nothing wrong with flying under the radar.
Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith has always been one the most reserved coaches in the NFL, and this season he is no different, even with the recent success of his team. Conversely, the NFL has become enchanted by the loud-mouthed rants of the New York Jets, who have seemingly taken after coach Rex Ryan‘s image.
The Bears, too, have taken their shape from their coach. Linebacker and captain Brian Urlacher said after the game, “We expected to be in this game. We didn’t get a lot of credit all season long, but we expected to be in this game. We’ve been good all season long. You play a game, you expect to win it. Hopefully, we’ll win next week.”
The NFL and its media have gotten away from this talk. The famous cliché, let your play do the talking, could not be more evident than with the Bears. Regardless of the situation, this team has risen to the occasion, and gotten the win to keep on moving towards its ultimate goal of the Super Bowl.
So let the media talk about the Jets and praise their style. Let it discard the Bears as lucky and overachieving. Let them fly under the radar, because they wouldn’t have it any other way.
