The longest running rivalry in football, 181 meetings since 1921, culminated in a thrilling, 20-17, Chicago Bears victory on Monday night in the Windy City.
Despite Green Bay holding a time of possession advantage of 35:49 to 24:11, Aaron Rodgers out-passing Jay Cutler 316 yards to 221 yards, Green Bay sacking Cutler three times to the Bears not sacking Rodgers at all, and Green Bay winning the turnover battle 2-1, the Bears won.
How did this happen?
Penalties
The Packers committed a near-record 18 penalties for 152 yards, killing drives, and giving life to Bears drives. By contrast, the Bears only committed five penalties for 38 yards.
Discipline, anyone? Yes, Soldier Field is a tough place to play, and a bunch of those Green Bay false start penalties were due to the Bears’ DT Julius Peppers shifting positions.
Rushing Defense
The Bears gave up a season-high 61 rushing yards to the Packers, forcing Green Bay to throw the ball almost every down. The Bears continue to lead the league with a ridiculous 39.7 rushing yards allowed per game.
Special Teams
Remember the defense mentioned above? The Bears went for it on fourth-and-goal on the one-foot line. Forte was stuffed. The D took over and forced the Pack to punt out of the end zone. Hester took it and broke one into the end zone, giving the Bears a 14-10 lead in the third quarter.
Defense
The Packers had three scoring drives, the Bears had four. The Bears consistently killed Packer drives, and their one turnover came at the opportune time, Urlacher punching the ball out of James Jones’ hands with just over two minutes to go and the score tied at 17-17.
