For most (if not all) NFL teams, scoring only 13 points in a game could spell disaster. It certainly doesn’t result in many wins for most teams.

This past week, however, a pair of teams won games by scoring only 13 points.

Last Thursday, the San Francisco 49ers tallied only 13 points in their 13-6 win over the Seattle Seahawks.

Four days later, the Bears won their fifth game of the season with a 13-7 win over the Detroit Lions. Prior to that, only one other team this year had won a game by scoring under 14 points; the Baltimore Ravens grabbed a win Week 5 with a 9-6 victory over Kansas City.

Through the first seven weeks of the 2012 season, there have been 39 teams that scored 13 or fewer points in a game, with only three teams winning, an .077 winning percentage.

For the Bears, the win Monday night was also the 40th win since 1966 (the start of the Super Bowl era) when they scored less than 14 points. The Bears top this category. Following are the number of wins for each NFL team in games where they scored less than 14 points (1966 through Week 7 of this season):

40: Chicago Bears

34: Indianapolis

31: Minnesota, Pittsburgh

28: Buffalo

27: New York Giants, Philadelphia, Tennessee

25: Cleveland

23: Oakland, Washington

22: Denver

21: Atlanta, Miami, New Orleans

20: Dallas, Kansas City, New England, Seattle

19: Detroit, St. Louis, San Francisco

18: Green Bay

17: New York Giants, Tampa Bay

14: Arizona, San Diego

12: Baltimore

11: Carolina, Jacksonville

8: Cincinnati

3: Houston

If we turn back the clock to the 2000 season, there have been 1,573 times when a team scored less than 14 points in a game; teams were 183-1,388-2 in those games, a winning percentage of .117.

Only five teams have won 20 percent or more of their games since 2000 when they scored less than 14 points: Pittsburgh (11-26, .297); New England (7-18, .280); Indianapolis (5-18, .217); Baltimore (11-43, .204); Green Bay (5-20; .200)

One team, the San Diego Chargers, is 0-30 since 2000 in games where it scores less than 14 points. The last time San Diego won a game where it scored less than 14 points was in the final game of the 1999 regular season when it defeated the Denver Broncos 12-6.

The Cleveland Browns have played in the most games since 2000 where they scored fewer than 14 points, 83. Indianapolis has played in the fewest games, 23.
