Chicago Bears: How Deep of a Playoff Run Can This Team Make?

The Chicago Bears are your 2010 NFC champions of the North. Yes, they looked quite nice in those snazzy hats that were conveniently awaiting them after they disposed of the Minnesota Vikings on Monday night.

Da Bears looked so very spiffy in the NFC North championship lids there on the frozen fake tundra at the University of the Golden Gophers.

Those hats were a nice gift for that retirement concussion party the Chicago defense held for the old gunslinger, yeah, him, No. 4, old Brett Favre. Perhaps the Bears should have sent one over to Brett, you know, just for old times sake.

The celebration is over and the Bears and their lovable Lovie Smith are back at work. There are serious matters remaining for the Modern Monsters of the Midway. Da Bears are 10-4 and their remaining games look like playoff games.

Sunday they host the New York Jets, fresh off that needed win over the Steelers. Nothing like the Jets regaining some swagger before they venture to Soldier Field. Then what’s more fitting than a season finale at Lambeau Field against those pesky Packers?

Two games remain, two very tough games for Da Bears.

Fact is Da Bears can use two Ws. The Bears need two Ws. It’s called momentum and you want it with the playoffs looming.

Now that we’re talking playoffs, the Bears need those wins to get that No. 2 seed. Yes, they could go 12-4 and tie with Atlanta if the Falcons go nuts and lose two in a row, but that’s not likely. What is likely is that the Bears want and need that second seed for that important first-round bye.

The bye would give them the week off to watch the wild card games and right now New Orleans and the Giants have the inside edge for those spots.

The two seed would put the Bears against the second lowest seed after the wild card games and they’ll have home field advantage there at balmy Soldier Field.

If Philly is the third seed and the Giants the sixth, they would play, while the winner of the pathetic NFC West would face off against the fifth seed, most likely New Orleans.

All this means that the Bears could end up hosting the Saints, while Atlanta is home against the Philly-Giants survivor if that matchup were to happen.

One home victory in the playoffs gets Chicago into the NFC championship game and that could well be Atlanta in the Georgia Dome.

So yes, there is a lot of work for Da Bears.

They want that second seed, they need that second seed.

Can the Bears go deep into the playoffs? It all depends on Jay Cutler, who can be very, very good and, well, sometimes not so good.

The defense is solid, special teams are, well, for lack of a better word, a Bear to contend with. Look up Devin Hester in the “don’t kick to” dictionary.

Yes, two weeks left, two VERY important games.

So, Chicago Bears, don’t get too comfy with those new hats.
