Chicago Bears Insider: A 25-Year Reunion?

I remember that magical season when the Chicago Bears rolled all the way to the Super Bowl.

They ended that season with a 15-1 record and two playoff victories in which they didn’t allow their opponent to score.  Then they took their show to New Orleans and played the New England Patriots in the NFL’s 20th Super Bowl.  It was one of the most hyped and watched games in NFL history.

No one really gave their opponent, the New England Patriots, a chance to win this game.

Only one team had success against the Bears that season (the Miami Dolphins), and the Patriots didn’t have what the Dolphins had on offense to beat what Chicago had on defense.

The spectacle was huge, as was the final score.  The Bears spotted the Patriots three points and then went on an offensive and defensive blitz, scoring 46 points on their way to leaving New England in the dust.  Final score: 46-10.

That was 25 years ago.

Chicago now sits just two games away from the Super Bowl.  So do the New England Patriots.  Could it be possible that these two teams could meet on the 25th anniversary of Super Bowl 20?  The NFL couldn’t ask for a better story line if this were to actually happen.  It’s definitely possible.

The Patriots are clearly the best team in the NFL heading into the playoffs and are virtually a lock to make the Super Bowl this season.  The Bears have a pretty good fight on their hands this weekend, in their first playoff game, in going up against the Seattle Seahawks.

It’s the perfect trap game, so the Bears can’t afford to have a letdown and must play their best.

If they win that game, then they will face either the Green Bay Packers at Soldier Field or they will take on the Falcons in Atlanta.  Both games would be equally tough, but if the Bears can get by them, then they will get to the Super Bowl.

So, imagine if the Bears actually got back to the Super Bowl in the 25th anniversary of their appearance and win in Super Bowl XX.

Imagine the storylines.  Imagine everything that we would see tying that team to the team that stormed through the NFL on their magical Super Bowl run.  And if the Patriots ended up being the opponent, it would be even more spectacular.

Granted, I may be jumping ahead of myself in thinking that the Bears would end up in the Super Bowl playing the Patriots, but it’s possible.

Would it be something that’s good for the NFL?  Of course it would be.  It would help bring back some of the “old” in the NFL and allow the newer generation of fans to learn more about what many feel is the best NFL team ever.

But as I said, it’s tough to start thinking ahead.  The Bears have two more games before they have a shot at winning in the Super Bowl and its win or go home, so if they lose, they are done, and all of this becomes a moot point.

We can hope and dream, though, and it would be nice if the Bears could get to the Super Bowl and play the Patriots.  It would be good for the Bears and good for the NFL.
