Chicago Bears: Is Talking About Urlacher’s Future with Bears Premature?

On Thursday ESPN’s Jeff Dickerson, broke the news that new Bears head coach Marc Trestman and current unrestricted free agent Brian Urlacher spoke on the phone earlier in the day.
Quick Marc Trestman recap: did speak to Urlacher for 30-40 minutes on the phone. Said Urlacher gave impression he wants to stay in Chicago.

It’s no surprise that Urlacher wants to stay in Chicago, but the real question is whether or not he will be lining back up next to Lance Briggs in a Chicago Bears uniform next season.
Mel Tucker, the newest defensive coordinator with the Bears, is a known specialist with defensive backs, but that doesn’t mean that Urlacher wouldn’t be welcome with the Bears. His return would provide some stability to a rapidly-changing team in Chicago.
After his phone conversation with the eight time Pro-Bowler, Trestman then went on to say that it was “premature” to say whether Urlacher would be taking the field with the Bears again next season (via NFL.com).
While it may seem premature for Trestman to be talking about Urlacher’s future with the team, longtime fans of the team want to know whether or not he will be back next season, and the term “premature” used by Marc Trestman may be a bit overdue.
The Bears still have quite a few questions surrounding them at the moment, Urlacher’s future being one of them.
Besides the big question in the linebacking core, the Bears still have to wonder about what to do with Devin Hester, how to fix the offensive line and what to do at receiver now that Johnny Knox is officially out of the picture (via NFL.com)
Oh yeah, and there’s an event called the NFL Draft coming up in just over two months.
With all the other things going on with the Bears and their organization right now, maybe talking about Urlacher and his future with the team isn’t “premature” at all. Maybe right now is just the right time to tackle one of the biggest issues the Bears have to deal with this offseason.
Now that the coaching staff is set, the questions have to start being dealt with and the issues resolved. A phone call between Trestman and Urlacher is promising, but fans would all like to see the situation dealt with and a decision made sooner rather than later.
After all, the Bears have made some pretty drastic changes to their scenery this past offseason. At this time, it remains to be seen whether or not Trestman is prepared to move on with or without one of the most iconic figures in Chicago sports over the past decade.
