Chicago Bears’ Loss to Green Bay Packers Provides Wake-Up Call for Offense

It is now painfully clear that the Chicago Bears offense is still a work in progress, despite an impressive showcase during the team’s season debut.
While under heavy pressure against the Green Bay Packers, Chicago’s offensive line collapsed, leading quarterback Jay Cutler to fall into old habits—forcing passes and making poor decisions.
Prone to having a hot head, Cutler was visibly upset throughout the game while continually being knocked down and rattled by Clay Matthews, who led the Packers with 3.5 sacks.
J’Marcus Webb, who got the starting nod at left tackle this preseason for the Bears, struggled mightily against a much tougher competitor this time around and was verbally attacked by his quarterback for failing to block and maintain protection.
Meanwhile, with their first Bears touchdowns in the books, rookie Alshon Jeffery and veteran Brandon Marshall were barely recognized on the field, collectively grabbing only three catches for a disappointing 31 total yards.
To make matters worse, Matt Forte, the crutch of the Chicago offense, left the game in the third quarter with an ankle injury.
All in all, this was a complete turnaround from their first game against the Indianapolis Colts and served as a heavy reminder that the Bears offense is still new and needs time to figure out its identity.
This is the first time the Bears offense was tested, and it failed miserably. But with a new offensive coordinator, new roles and new receivers, what can you expect against a team that went 15-1 last season?
Sure, the Bears have the potential to be a great team, but right now, they’re not. The defense looks sharp, quick and solid, but that’s nothing new in Chicago. The real question mark lands on the offense, whose weaknesses were pointed out in prime time against the Packers.
Simply put, if you pressure Cutler, you can beat the Bears. If he has time, though, it’s game over.
At least, that’s what it looks like two weeks into the season. But let’s not forget, we still have 14 games to go, and as we all know, a lot can happen in a season.
