The Bears entered a stadium fit for a king on Sunday and not many expected them to come away with a victory.  After all, this is the team that was one controversial call away from dropping their season opener to the lowly Detroit Lions.  What’s more, since many folks always seem to think that the Dallas Cowboys are destined for greatness every year they seem to field a decent team, there was also the feeling that the Cowboys were not going to let their record fall to 0-2.  Turns out the Bears had other ideas.

Rather than wilt under the pressure of playing in front a huge crowd inside a $1.3 billion playing facility, the Bears flew out of Arlington with a monster 27-20 victory.  You couldn’t tell that it would turn out that way early on as it appeared the offensive line was not ready to play.  It seemed like it was only a matter of time before Jay Cutler wound up in the hospital with who knows what.  The team made adjustments though and soon, Cutler had all the protection he needed to have the type of day many fans feel he could have on a regular basis.

The turning point of the game came in the second quarter when Cutler threw a 59-yard bomb to Johnny Knox that set up a Devin Hester touchdown that the Bears a lead they would never relinquish.  All-around, it was a big day for Cutler, who completed 21 of 29 passes for 277 yards and three touchdowns.  Matt Forte struggled on the ground, gaining just 29 yards on 10 carries.  However, he also caught five passes for 37 yards and one touchdown.

Tony Romo was 34-of-51 in pass completions for 374 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions, both of which came at the hands of D.J. Moore in what was unquestionably the breakout game for the second-year cornerback out of Vanderbilt.  Charles Tillman also forced a late fumble that was recovered by Brian Urlacher.  Dallas ran the ball only 20 times, resulting in an offense that the Bears’ defense made one-dimensional.

For all the good things about the Bears thus far, the running game still needs to wake up if the team is to be taken seriously this season.  That’s two games in a row that it’s been held in check.  Perhaps they need to work on it a little more in practice.  Cutler may finally be showing signs of becoming a star in this town, but he can’t do it all by himself.

Even if the Bears fail to make the playoffs this season, this is a game that Bears fans can look back on as one to remember.  For now however, they see a team that has gotten off to a pleasantly surprising 2-0 start.  Even better, they are tied atop the NFC North with Green Bay.  That means the stakes were just raised for the game between the two old rivals that will take place in front a national TV audience on Monday night.  Hopefully, the Illinois-Wisconsin border doesn’t become a war zone while everyone waits for the game.
