Chicago Bears Training Camp: Can Dan LeFevour Make The Team?

In 2009, the Chicago Bears only kept two quarterbacks on their roster: Starter Jay Cutler and backup Caleb Hanie, who is almost certain to open the season as the number two QB.
But last year, the Bears didn’t have Dan LeFevour.
On the surface, Bears fans may wonder why a sixth-round draft choice like LeFevour is such a big deal.
But, with the Bears resting Cutler for most of Monday’s practice, LeFevour saw extensive action, running the second-team offense in team drills—and he looked good.
This team has so many tight ends, in a Mike Martz offense that only values TEs that block no less, that it is reasonable to think it will keep only two QBs. But if that is true, Bears fans will be missing out on a guy who can really play the position.
Dez Clark had this to say about LeFevour:
“He looked decisive and not nervous, [because] that’s one thing you look for in a rookie, that’s he’s not out there with a deer-in-the-headlights kind of stare. He was out there looking comfortable and making plays.”
Alright, we understand that 180 players were drafted ahead of the QB from Central Michigan, but LeFevour has the most total touchdowns in NCAA history. He is also the only player in NCAA history with 12,000 career passing yards and 2,500 career rushing yards. And yet, he may end up a prospect for the Bears practice squad.
A great, local athlete with below average arm strength, LeFevour wouldn’t be the first QB drafted late that was better than his pedigree would suggest. Tom Brady was also selected in the sixth round.
Look, it’s not as if Hanie has done anything spectacular enough for him to be the unabashed backup. But politics are what they are.
Of course, if the Bears are going to win anything this season, they need Cutler to remain healthy. But if he does gets hurt—and God knows that offensive line may end up killing him—it would be nice to know that the backup can play.
