One thing is for sure, it’s a hot training camp in Bourbonnais. Heat indexes have reached as high as 105 this week already as the humidity is stifling. The players are keeping themselves cool by drinking plenty of water, sitting in ice tubs, and taking breaks on a regular basis.
Things seemed to have cooled down a bit in the passing game after quarterback Jay Cutler took Monday off and returned playing less than stellar. The Bears are also starting to install some plays that they will be using in their game against the San Diego on Saturday, so things are really starting to get interesting.
The following is a quick look at some of the things that have happened in training camp over the last couple of days, including some ever-important insight into the latest injury news.
Defensively Speaking
The Bears defense had a pretty good night on Tuesday.
Back after a day off, Cutler threw interceptions to both cornerback Zack Bowman and safety Chris Harris.
Safety Major Wright stole one from Dan LeFevour as well.
Injury Update
Some of the people who didn’t practice during the Tuesday night session included Harvey Unga, Brian Iwuh (knee), Earl Bennett, Brandon Manumaleuna, (knee), Danieal Manning, Pisa Tinoisamoa, Antonio Robinson and Hunter Hillenmeyer.
Wide receiver Devin Hester has come back to practice after being out for a few days with an injury.
Caleb Hanie, Johnny Knox, and Greg Olsen were given a veterans night off (on Tuesday night).
Davis Hanging On
Rashied Davis, once thought to be on the way out of Chicago after this year’s training camp was over has been doing more than expected in training camp and right now some people think that he could hold onto a roster spot this next season. In drills this Tuesday night, Davis caught two touchdown passes and has been looking solid. Will he be on the roster when it’s all said and done?
Wildcat’s Back
The Bears gave their fans a little bit of a treat Tuesday night as offensive coordinator Mike Martz threw in the wildcat formation. Running back Matt Forte attempted a pass but it fell incomplete.
Watch the Rookies
No one can expect rookies to come in and play well right away (unless of course they are special). The Bears rookies are no exception as they have looked good at times but struggled in others. Quite possibly the most well put together rookie in training camp so far has been cornerback Joshua Moore. Granted, he has been working with the second team so far, but he’s looked pretty good and could see some playing time this season.
Harris is Back
The Bears and their fans were excited to see safety Chris Harris, re-acquired from the Carolina Panthers after being traded to them after the Super Bowl as he put on quite a display at training camp. Harris intercepted two passes and had one other pass defended. Other defenders that had interceptions during the day included one by safety Josh Bullocks and another by safety Al Afalava.
Cutler Sliding?
Wednesday’s practice, for Cutler, wasn’t that good, but it wasn’t that bad either. He did have some solid plays including big passes to tight end Greg Olsen and wide receiver Devin Hester. He did have an awesome pass to Knox caught in the end zone for a touchdown which was one of his best passes in camp so far.
The Bears will have one final practice today before traveling to San Diego to take on the Chargers in their first preseason game of the new year. Stay turned for a preview of this game coming up right here soon.
