Chicago Bears Weekly Progress Report: Bears Needs to Stop Late-Season Fade

It feels like the entire city of Chicago has already written off the season. After about 15-20 minutes of Chicago sports radio, media coverage and reading Twitter, I had to go back and check the standings.

The Bears remain 8-5, but the feeling seems to be that they will be competing with the Lions for the bottom of the NFC North.

That’s what dropping two games in a row and four out of the last five feels like.

At a time when playoff hopefuls are heating up, the Bears are doing the complete opposite. As much as I like thinking outside the box, this might be a mistake.

All kidding aside, Chicago is in the midst of another late-season swoon, so you cannot blame fans for feeling itchy.

Last season it came about because the team lost both Jay Cutler and Matt Forte. While both guys are currently healthy (though Cutler injured his neck against the Vikings), the Bears have had multiple injuries along the offensive line and throughout the defense.

It’s hard to pin down exactly what is going on with Chicago, as it never seems to be one thing with them over the last month.

Injuries, exhaustion, predictable play calling—they don’t all happen at once, but they’ve cost them a game here or there.

The Bears need to finish strong and regain the confidence and ferocity they had back in early November just before the current skid.

Not just because their playoff lives hang in the balance—but because the late-season fade has become a habit, and one they need to break.
