Cutler Adds to Bears Injury Woes and More NFC North News

Jay Cutler is hurt.

If you’re a Chicago Bears fan and that sends a chill down your spine, please take a moment to collect yourself and then come back.

Better?

Brad Biggs reported on Cutler’s injury in the Chicago Tribune and lists it as a sprained MCL in his knee. While he will most certainly play against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, one would assume his mobility could be limited.

Given he was lit up like a Christmas tree in Week 2 by this same Packers team, that could be a real issue.

While the news comes as somewhat of a surprise, it does give you a perspective on a few events over the past week.

First, it sheds some more light on why Cutler was out at the end of the loss to the Minnesota Vikings. The knee must have been bothering him enough to where the coaches didn’t want to chance a more serious injury.

That’s wise, considering their backup situation; while better than last year, it isn’t fantastic.

Secondly, it gives us some insight as to why the team brought in Josh Johnson and Stephen McGee for quarterback tryouts. Again, better safe than sorry. If Cutler’s knee gets worse, they will have some ideas who they could go to (and who they wouldn’t) as a backup.

This is potentially a bad piece of news at a very bad time. The Bears may be able to limp along with the injuries they had prior to this, but if Cutler goes down they lose a critical linchpin to their team.

They’d better be as cautious with Cutler’s knee as they can.

On to the rest of the NFC North.

Chicago Bears

Earl Bennett has been ruled out for Sunday according to Jeff Dickerson and Michael Wright of ESPN Chicago.

The Chicago Sun-Times’ Sean Jensen says Brian Urlacher has joined in on the war of words between the Bears and Packers.

Detroit Lions

In a fractured locker room, at least one player has Ndamukong Suh’s back. Dominic Raiola came to Suh’s defense according to Ansar Khan of MLive.com.

The Detroit Free Press’ Dave Birkett says that Calvin Johnson feels Larry Fitzgerald‘s pain.

Green Bay Packers

Dom Capers has taken some heat for his defensive schemes this year (rightfully so), but Brian Carriveau of CheeseheadTV.com says he (and Clay Matthews) are the reason the pass rush was better this year

The Green Bay Press-Gazette’s Rob Demovsky says that these final three games could determine what happens with Greg Jennings and the Packers.

Minnesota Vikings

ESPN’s Judd Zulgad says that winning the NFL MVP would mean a lot to a very selfless player.

Jared Allen and I may not agree on a ton but one thing we have in common according to Dan Wiederer of the Star-Tribune: we both think the expanded playoff idea is stupid.
