The Bears announced that Trevathan was placed on injured reserve, with wide receiver Daniel Braverman being moved up to the active roster.
Bears head coach John Fox confirmed Trevathan’s torn patellar tendon Monday. Stephania Bell of ESPN (h/t Jeff Dickerson of ESPN.com) reported that the injury is one of the toughest to recuperate from, with a recovery time of six to nine months and sometimes longer.
Trevathan Was Signed to Bolster Bears Defense
Trevathan had 109 combined tackles and two interceptions in 2015, serving as a key piece on a defense that delivered a Super Bowl title to the Denver Broncos. He entered the offseason as one of the best inside linebackers on the free-agent market, and the Chicago Bears signed him to a four-year deal worth $24.5 million.
Only two games into the regular season, the Bears watched their marquee signing go down with an injury. Trevathan underwent surgery on his thumb following Chicago’s Week 2 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, which kept him out until an Oct. 9 matchup with the Indianapolis Colts.
The Bears identified inside linebacker as a major area in need of an upgrade before the start of the season, adding not only Trevathan but also Jerrell Freeman. With Freeman suspended four games Nov. 21 for a violation of the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy, the injury is an even bigger blow to the Bears defense.
Fox will still need to find a replacement opposite the former Indianapolis Colts linebacker, though. Christian Jones is the likeliest candidate to step into a starting role. He made 13 starts for the Bears in 2015, so he has experience.
Jones’ struggles last year, however, in part necessitated the arrivals of Trevathan and Freeman, so he’s not an ideal substitute for Trevathan.
