Chicago has often been hailed as one of the top sports cities in the nation, and rightfully so. Chicago has been, and will be for many years, a city whose people will follow their Chicago teams like it was their kids taking their first steps.
It’s not always the most successful sports city, and because of that, Chicago fans tend to be a little weary and hesitant when their teams make it into the playoffs, but recent success by the other Chicago teams are slowly erasing the hesitant thoughts of Chicago fans.
Chicago is blessed with top notch professional sports teams. The Chicago Blackhawks are coming off their Stanley Cup victory. The White Sox won their third World Series in 2005 since the franchise began. The Bulls, equipped with young stars like Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah and veterans like Carlos Boozer, have the Bulls slowly becoming a top contender in the Eastern Conference.
And so now, we come to the Chicago Bears.
This Sunday, they will play the Green Bay Packers for a trip to Dallas to play for the Super Bowl. It’s been the talk of the region for days and will continue to be talked about way after the game is played.
Sports commentators have tried “scaring” Chicago fans by professing how well oiled this Green Bay team is. And, I admit, Green Bay has played spectacular during the playoffs, winning every game on the road.
But,you know what, we’re confident too.
The shift the Bears made about halfway through the season even surprised me. Finally, the Bears have an offense the city can be proud of.
Go ahead ESPN, and bad mouth Cutler for a bad pass.
Go ahead Rick Reilly, and write a damning piece.
Go ahead, so called “experts,” and pick the Packers to win.
We don’t mind. Really, we don’t.
It doesn’t matter what you write, say, or predict. We still believe, in our hearts, we have a team that can win the Super Bowl this season. Bring on the Packers.
They may scare you, but they don’t scare us.
So Chicago fans, let them try to take away your confidence. Let them try to remind you of the losing years some of us are so accustomed to.
But NEVER let them take away your dedication because that’s what fans thrive on, and Chicago, you have some of the best.
