As if the constant “Devin Hester will be a wide receiver” chant that has come out of Halas Hall wasn’t loud enough this summer, the Chicago Bears turned it up to 11 by signing former Minnesota Viking Lorenzo Booker to a one-year contract (via the Chicago Bears Twitter page).

Booker has just 61 carries for 231 yards during his four-year career with Minnesota, the Philadelphia Eagles and the Miami Dolphins. He also has 47 receptions for 362 receiving yards. Booker’s primary contributions have been on returning kickoffs. In his last two seasons with the Vikings, Booker has 37 kick returns for 879 yards and no TDs.

The Bears have been touting Devin Hester as a wide receiver to anyone who will listen to them for several seasons now.

However, this year they seem committed to making it stick. Booker joins free agents Eric Weems and Devin Thomas as three return specialists that Chicago has added to their roster this summer.

While Weems seems like the only guy who is sure to make the final 53-man roster, the commitment to limit Hester’s involvement in the return game is pretty clear. The Chicago return game will be one of the key things to keep an eye on when training camp opens next week.
