Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green is never shy about showing his emotions on the court, but after picking up his second technical foul of the season Thursday, he expressed concern about the manner in which he’s being officiated.
According to Marc J. Spears of ESPN’s The Undefeated, the All-Star said he was assessed a technical foul for celebrating a dunk by teammate Kevin Durant in the Dubs’ 122-96 decimation of the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday in addition to getting T’d up for celebrating his own dunk in the season opener against the San Antonio Spurs:
I got two techs this year for yelling, “Ahhh?” At this point, do I need to wear a mask? Am I allowed to show emotion on the floor? That’s who I am. I play with emotion. … I love this game, so I’m going to show emotion. But if you yell, “Ahhh,” after a dunk … I’ve never seen anyone get a tech for that.
After picking up 12 technical fouls during the 2015-16 regular season and four flagrants during last season’s playoffs, per Spears, Green suggested he is watched closely based on his history: “At a certain point, you kind of get a reputation and you’re judged off that reputation. I think I’ve gotten a reputation for arguing calls. That’s what I got techs for [last season]. I understand that. Now I don’t argue calls, so why am I getting techs for yelling?”
Green is hopeful both techs will be rescinded, and he is looking for some clarity from the NBA with regard to why his actions were deemed illegal:
I look forward to getting an explanation on the first and the second one. You can’t yell after a good play? So I’m looking for an explanation for both. I think they both should get rescinded. They said I was disrespecting the referees.
All right, I’m not talking to them no more. But now you want to give me a tech for yells? It’s not like I’m standing in someone’s face yelling.
According to the NBA rule book, a technical foul “may be assessed to any player on the court or anyone seated on the bench for conduct which, in the opinion of an official, is detrimental to the game.”
That leaves plenty of gray area and room for interpretation from the officials’ perspective, as specific acts such as yelling aren’t part of the description.
Green has proven to be an emotional and outspoken person both on and off the court, and while he must be careful to avoid future technicals that could hurt his team, toning things down could adversely impact his game as a whole.
