Fed-Up Bears Fans Are Now Burning Jay Cutler Jerseys

I expected anti-Jay Cutler chatter to become a full-fledged movement after Sunday night.

What I did not expect, however, was the first wave of backlash to show up practically on my doorstep.

Nonetheless, the hapless Chicago Bears were spitted and fondue’d 55-14 by the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night, and I awoke Monday morning to find a ripped-up, half-burnt Cutler jersey lying in a heap on the sidewalk near my Chicago apartment.

I am not a Bears fan. I have no idea whose jersey it was, but someone appears to have ripped it from their body like a clergyman tearing his robes. It also looks like they used multiple cigarettes to light the jersey on fire.

This is not the only Cutler jersey torched Sunday.

Deadspin’s Tom Ley spotted video of other Bears fans in various states of hysteria going about the dirty of work of erasing Cutler’s existence from memory.

One father-son duo disposed of their Cutler jerseys in an outdoor fire pit. They tossed the articles on the flames before halftime and were disappointed further when the jerseys didn’t catch fire.

Another fan opted for a burial, laying all six of his Bears jerseys to rest in the ground after the loss. He included a Walter Payton jersey—his first Bears jersey—in his little, dejected time capsule, if that helps you grasp the depths of despair now consuming the Chicago fanbase.

As for Cutler, Sunday might’ve been the death blow for the last of the quarterback’s supporters. Like Capulets and Montagues, the pro- and anti-Cutler factions in the Chicago fanbase have warred over his place in the franchise for years, and even Cutler struggled to find an excuse for the team’s historically bad performance.

“We felt really good coming into this one,” Cutler told the media, via ChicagoBears.com. “To play like that, you know, it’s embarrassing.” He continued, “We can’t figure it out right now. … There’s a lot of frustrated guys in that locker room.”

Cutler finished the game with 272 yards passing, one touchdown and two interceptions. His second interception resulted in an 82-yard pick-six touchdown for Packers cornerback Casey Hayward.

The 3-6 Bears are now all but out of the playoff picture and face a tough remaining schedule with the Detroit Lions, Dallas Cowboys and pesky Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints still on the schedule.

I’ll keep an eye out for more burnt Cutler jerseys, but at this rate, they’ll be lining Grant Park like sod by Week 16.
