Jason Campbell: Updated Fantasy Outlook and Analysis for Bears QB

Despite starting his first game of the 2012 season on Monday night, Chicago Bears quarterback Jason Campbell is not worthy of your fantasy attention this week or in any week down the road.
The matchup against the San Francisco 49ers is a fantasy nightmare for a backup quarterback, and his hold over the starting position is not expected to be long-lived. Starting him in such a pivotal fantasy week playoff-wise is a no-go.
Campbell (owned in just 0.5 percent of ESPN leagues) was handed the start Monday night after the Bears ruled out starting quarterback Jay Cutler because of a concussion he suffered in last Sunday night’s loss to the Houston Texans.
While concussion symptoms can drag on for weeks, most players are able to sit out a game and then play the following week. The Bears play the Minnesota Vikings in Week 12, a game most will expect Cutler to start.
Until then, Campbell must face a daunting task on the road in San Francisco.
The 49ers are the fifth-best fantasy defense against opposing quarterbacks this season, which would have made it difficult for owners to start Cutler this week. No matter which way you slice it, Campbell is a downgrade at the position. You should treat him as such.
Campbell didn’t exactly light the world on fire in his brief appearance against the Texans, either.
In a half of work, Campbell completed 11 of 19 passes for just 94 yards. He threw no touchdowns or interceptions and finished with a passer rating of 70.9.
Granted, weather conditions weren’t ideal for passing football, and the Bears receivers made a few crucial mistakes late. But Campbell was far from sharp as he led Chicago to just three second-half points.
Also, inserting a high-risk, low-reward option like Campbell as your starting quarterback in Week 11 of the fantasy season—a crucial week for playoff positioning—is asking for trouble.
If you’re a fantasy owner in dire need of a quarterback option this week, take a chance on Philadelphia Eagles starter Nick Foles. He’s facing a Redskins defense that has allowed the fourth-most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks.
Stay away from Campbell. He has very little fantasy value for both Week 11 and the rest of the fantasy season.
