Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler hit tight end Martellus Bennett for a one-yard touchdown pass in the first half of his team’s Monday night game against the San Diego Chargers and made history in the process.

As the team noted, Cutler became the all-time leader in Chicago Bears franchise history with 138 touchdown passes:

The NFL shared footage of the record-setting play:

Cutler passed Hall of Famer Sid Luckman, who threw 137 touchdowns as a member of the Bears from 1939 to 1950. While Cutler holds the Chicago record for touchdown passes, Luckman won four NFL championships with the Bears (1940, 1941, 1943 and 1946).

Cutler’s boom-or-bust nature was on full display in the first half of Monday’s game. He threw a pick-six that put his team in an early 13-0 hole but responded with an 80-yard drive that culminated with the one-yard scoring strike to Bennett.

Talent has never been a question for the former Vanderbilt star, but his inconsistency is why he doesn’t rank among the league’s best quarterbacks despite the touchdown numbers. He has 135 interceptions in his career, and he threw 26 in his first season with the Bears.

Michael David Smith of ProFootballTalk compared Cutler’s record to Luckman’s totals:

It’s a very different NFL today than the one Luckman played in, and it’s a lot easier to rack up touchdown passes. When Luckman led the NFL in touchdown passes with 28 in 1943, it was a single-season NFL record. Cutler’s career high is also 28 touchdown passes, which he set last year — when he was 10th in the league.

Cutler has been with the Bears since the 2009 campaign. He has topped 3,000 passing yards four times in Chicago and led his team to the 2010 NFC Championship Game. Even if he never wins a Super Bowl, he etched his name in franchise history Monday.
