Jay Cutler has been cleared to practice fully on Wednesday after suffering a concussion causing him to miss last week’s game against the Carolina Panthers.
Barring a setback, Cutler should start Sunday.
In other Bears quarterbacking news, Caleb Hanie is said to be moving up the depth chart as the backup to Cutler thanks in large part to a horrendous start on Sunday by Todd Collins in which he threw four interceptions, finishing with a 6.2 passer rating. Collins became the fifth quarterback since 1990 to throw four interceptions and no touchdowns in a game in which his team pulled out a victory.
According to multiple NFL sources, and Bears fans everywhere, Collins will be demoted to the No. 3 quarterback position come Wednesday when Cutler returns.
However, there is speculation, with the Bears expressing a strong desire in training camp to have just two quarterbacks in camp for flexibility reasons, Collins could be released.
On the other side of that, the idea of bringing just two quarterbacks changed when Hanie was injured in the preseason opener. The Bears could take the safe route once again with Cutler missing his first game due to injury in his five-year NFL career.
If the team does release Collins, it will cost them $1 million as he can collect the balance of his salary as termination pay even if he signs with another team.
