Jay Cutler: Shows No Leadership Or Heart Against The Packers

In the biggest game of his career, Jay Cutler played some of the worst 30 minutes of football I’ve ever seen. He then pulled a move I thought I’d never see from a professional athlete. He allowed himself to be benched for a “knee-injury”.

Later on, it was released that he injured his MCL, an important, but not crucial ligament like an ACL.

My take on the events that took place Sunday at Soldier Field was that they were child-like and showed no signs of leadership and no love for his team or the game. If Cutler really cared about the Bears, he would have been in the ear of backups Todd Collins and Caleb Haine, giving support and advice.

Instead, Cutler was constantly shown by cameras just sitting on the bench being totally aloof, without a sign of concern on his face. Cutler clearly quit on his team; he mentally checked out of the game.

This all made me think about one play where he could’ve decided to quit. The Bears had the ball on the goal line late in the first quarter when Cutler almost was sacked for a safety, but pulled a Tim Tebow maneuver, jumping in the air and releasing the ball toward running back Matt Forte.

Shortly after, the Bears were forced to punt it once again.

Football is supposed to be the toughest sport in the world. Many NFL players often say, “If you’re hurt, you can play, if you’re injured, you’re on IR and can’t play.”

Football players gut it out on a bad knee or hamstring, hope for no further damage and deal with the consequences the next day.

Well from what I could see on Sunday, Cutler clearly wasn’t injured with a ‘knee injury’, he was injured from no heart or desire. If you’re injured with a ‘knee injury’ you shouldn’t be able to stand on the sideline, let alone without crutches, which was constantly shown on Sunday.

An NFL quarterback is supposed to be a leader and knowledgeable, but most importantly, has to love the game. While he has one of the strongest arms in the league, it has been known that Cutler’s work ethic sucks, and that he is a whiner.

After his pre-school actions, it’s plain and simple for me. If I’m Bears GM Jerry Angelo, I cut him. You’re paying this guy 50 million dollars to not take his job seriously.

If Cutler really took his job seriously, he would refuse to let Todd Collins come in and replace him. He would run out onto that field and say, “Todd, this is my team.”

Cutler always seems to have this “I don’t care,” look on his face, and seeing that face once again on Sunday really pissed me off. He constantly seems to play football because he was born with a great gift and gets to make millions, not because he loves the game.

If Cutler really loved the game, you would hear stories about him being the first to arrive and last to leave the facility everyday. He would constantly be watching film, not just of himself, but also of all the greats, trying to emulate them and truly be his best.

But, maybe, Cutler is at his best. Maybe his best is just showing up to the park everyday, not giving a rat’s ass, hoping that his God-given talent, not hard work, get him through another day, and one step further from a Super Bowl.
