John Fox and the Denver Broncos have gone their separate ways, which has just changed the game. His name shot up to the top of many lists of teams searching for a head coach, including the Chicago Bears. As a young general manager, Ryan Pace needs John Fox to help quickly rebuild a very dismal Bears team.
Bears fans are clamoring for a leader who has head coaching experience. Well, who is more qualified than John Fox? He took over a team that had the league’s worst defense in 2011 and led the Broncos to four straight AFC West titles, went 46-18 in four years and took them to the Super Bowl last year.
Before his tenure at Denver, he took the Panthers to the Super Bowl after Carolina went 1-15 prior to Fox’s arrival two seasons beforehand.
It makes it easy to see why people see him as a resurrection coach.
John Fox is now seen as the favorite for this position due to his ties with Ernie Accorsi.
Dan Wiederer of the Chicago Tribune writes that Pace’s priorities for a new head coach are, “Confidence. Charisma. Discipline. Leadership.” After all, that is what he had with Sean Payton in New Orleans.
John Fox embodies all of those traits, and he may be even more upbeat than Payton.
Former Broncos wide receiver Eric Decker told Elizabeth Merrill of ESPN.com, “He’s a guy that you want to play hard for. We have a good relationship. He kind of has that father figure role as a head coach. An open-door policy. He makes you feel comfortable and confident.”
According to Sam Cowhick of Mile High Sports, another Broncos receiver, Andre Caldwell, had this to say about Fox:
Everybody in here has so much respect for him, so much love for him because he treats us like men. He respects us like men when we hit the football field. He knows how to approach people and be a good guy and he knows how to get on you when he needs to. He has a relationship with every player on this team. If you’re in the dog house he will tell you. He won’t keep you in the dark, he will let you know. When you have respect for someone you will go all out for them.
The release of John Fox is a godsend to the Bears organization. His connections with Ernie Accorsi and Sean Payton should land him in Chicago to rebuild a disappointing franchise for the third time in his career.
